Stainless Steel Scraper Conveyor for Maize Processing

Stainless steel scraper conveyor for maize and grain handling

The Voson Stainless Steel Scraper Conveyor provides enclosed, continuous transfer of maize, corn grits, bran, maize germ, grain products and other bulk materials in maize milling and grain processing plants. An endless chain fitted with scraper flights moves the material through a rectangular casing, making the equipment suitable for horizontal conveying between bins, processing machines and packing sections.

Unlike an open belt conveyor, the material travels inside a covered casing. This arrangement helps contain dust, reduce product loss and protect the conveying route from the surrounding production environment. The conveyor length, casing section, chain, scraper arrangement, inlet and outlet positions, drive system and supporting structure are configured for each project.

No universal capacity or motor-power value applies to every scraper conveyor. Final selection depends on material bulk density, particle size, moisture, flowability, conveying distance, route, loading condition and required throughput.

How an Enclosed Scraper Conveyor Works

The conveying chain runs continuously around the head and tail sprockets inside the casing. Scraper flights attached to the chain pull or push the bulk material along the bottom of the conveying chamber from the feeding point to the selected discharge point.

The head section normally contains the drive assembly, while the tail section provides chain take-up or tension adjustment. Guide components support the return chain and help maintain stable operation. Inspection covers and access points can be arranged for chain inspection, cleaning and maintenance.

Multiple inlets can receive material from bins or processing equipment. One or more outlets can be arranged according to the production process, subject to the selected discharge structure. The feed rate must remain within the conveyor's designed load to prevent material buildup and excessive chain tension.

For powders or small granules that require inclined or vertical transfer, a stainless steel screw conveyor or another conveying method may be more suitable. Voson can compare the available space, lifting height, cleaning requirements and material characteristics before confirming the equipment type.

Main Features

  • Enclosed conveying route: The covered casing helps control dust and limits material loss during transfer.
  • Suitable for horizontal conveying: The chain-and-scraper structure is well suited to connecting production stages over a horizontal distance.
  • Stainless steel contact surfaces: Product-contact casing and scraper components can be manufactured from stainless steel according to the required construction scope.
  • Customized inlets and outlets: Connection sizes and positions can match bins, process equipment and discharge chutes.
  • Multiple feeding points: Several upstream machines or bins can feed one conveying line when the loading arrangement is properly engineered.
  • Accessible inspection: Covers, inspection openings and cleanout points can be added according to maintenance and hygiene requirements.
  • Production-line control: Level sensors, blockage monitoring and electrical interlocks can coordinate the conveyor with upstream and downstream equipment.

The required stainless steel grade, surface finish and stainless steel scope must be confirmed before production. Product-contact parts, drive components and the supporting frame do not automatically use the same material unless a complete stainless steel construction is specified.

Applications in Maize and Grain Processing

In a maize processing plant, the stainless steel scraper conveyor can collect material from several discharge points and move it to the next production stage. It is especially useful where the plant layout requires enclosed horizontal transfer beneath bins, cleaning equipment or milling sections.

Typical installation positions include:

  1. Beneath raw-maize or grain storage bins for controlled horizontal discharge.
  2. After a corn degermination machine for transferring maize germ or related by-products.
  3. Between corn-grits grading, storage and blending sections.
  4. Beneath bran or maize-germ collection hoppers.
  5. Between a processing section and a finished-product buffer bin.
  6. Before a flour packing machine when the material and layout suit scraper conveying.

The equipment can also be evaluated for suitable grains, feed ingredients and other free-flowing bulk products. Very sticky, highly abrasive, fragile or poorly flowing materials require a separate engineering assessment because they can affect residue, wear, chain load and discharge performance.

Scraper Conveyor or Screw Conveyor?

Both conveyor types provide enclosed material transfer, but their operating structures and preferred applications differ.

Selection PointStainless Steel Scraper ConveyorStainless Steel Screw Conveyor
Conveying elementChain with scraper flightsRotating helical screw
Preferred routeMainly horizontal transferHorizontal or inclined transfer
Typical roleCollecting and moving bulk material along a production lineFeeding, short-distance transfer and inclined lifting
Multiple feed pointsCan be arranged along the casingCan also be customized
Internal accessInspection covers and access sectionsTubular or removable U-trough cover
Main selection factorsChain load, casing section, route and discharge arrangementScrew diameter, pitch, speed and installation angle

A scraper conveyor is often selected for enclosed horizontal collection below several bins or processing machines. A screw conveyor is often preferred for compact feeding, metering or inclined transfer. The final decision should be based on the material, route, required capacity and cleaning procedure rather than equipment name alone.
